HIGHLY ACCLAIMED

Diego Piccinato

Vancouver Film School
Diego's entry was one of the Judging Panels favourite, but unfortunately it was recently removed as he accepted a full time job at a leading production studio in Canada. Congratulations on the new job Diego!

SCHOOL OF THE YEAR

Vancouver Film School

Vancouver Film School was founded on the philosophy that one year of concentrated production work combined with industry-led theory is more valuable than four years of purely theoretical instruction. This unique educational model has proven to be successful across our 13 programs, allowing students to achieve more in one year - or less - than at any other school.

In 12 months or less, students receive a rigorous and comprehensive education including lectures, tutorials, productions, collaborations with other departments, mentorship with working professionals, and insight from guest speakers.

The keys to the VFS model are intensity and structure: there's no such thing as "down time" during a year at VFS - unlike university and college educations, each term, each week, each day is filled with learning and creating. And rather than picking and choosing from a variety of courses, your VFS education is carefully designed so that the courses and projects in each term build directly upon what you learned the term before.

This is why one intensive year at VFS is the equivalent of a 3 or 4 year program at another academic institution. It's also what makes a VFS education perfect for students who don't want to spend a lot of time in school before starting their careers in the entertainment industry.

Visit VFS program pages to learn more about a program's specific curriculum.

SOME COMMENTS FROM THE JUDGING PANEL

Eric  Guaglione

Nice work students! I've seen wonderful attention to detail and a wide range of styles. A tip for your reels - keep in mind we typically turn the sound off (so that we can discuss your reel as it's being played). Watch your reel this way and see if it works as well as you thought. Keep up the good work!

Gavin  Graham

Lots of good stuff on show, the more focussed reels in particular categories definitely stood a better chance at winning in that area, which would apply for jobs as well - the more focussed you are on a specific area, and the more you can demonstrate specific skills in that area, the more chance you give yourself at a way in! For generalists, stay focussed on producing well packaged shots .. story comes second unfortunately, you'll rarely be going for Director positions with your student reel!

Pietro  Ponti

Congratulations to all very nice work indeed. Some advice that helps me everyday with the Vfx-Realistic work we do in Double Negative. Keep on improving your skills by looking at the world around you, try to see how much the light plays in between objects, try to isolate every source of light that makes up an image and understand what they bring to the final composition. We work for the camera, so try to look at pictures and movies continuously, and understand how lenses behave. Its of the utmost importance that you realize how a good depth of field or a specific distortion comes to be. Then go back to the real world and see how you perceive the same image just captured by a camera, try to see where are the limitations of the device and what your eye is trained to spot first. Well done guys!

THANKS TO ALL OUR AMAZING SPONSORS AND JUDGES, WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT THIS EVENT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE.
