AMATEUR - BOGART 1 Year, 1 Month ago
My name is Patrick Hornby and this is the character concept for my Creatures and Critters Competition entry.

This fella's name is Bogart and he is from the Phailor race; this race resides in warm tropical climates. Bogart is from the Everglades, in Florida, where his race used to be worshiped by the Seminole Indians. Once the Seminoles vacated the area, the race was forgotten...until now.

Bogart loves spending time walking on the beach with his tail slithering in the sand. His mandibles are used for such foods as coconuts, turtles, and crabs. He loves eating to the point of not moving. Unfortunately, this has led to his overweight issue and other Phailors making fun of him. To prove everyone wrong, Bogart has set out to Miami, where an underground modeling agency takes photographs for the creature community.

We hope to see Bogart succeed by the end of the Creatures and Critters Competition. It is said that he wishes to be in a Monster Truck calendar.

This is my first competition and I'm very excited to be part of the community.

Great sketch! Big feet
Good for him that he doesn´t need shoes. Would be damn hard to find some!
Good luck with the competition.

Thanks for the replies so far.

As I continue with this character, I''m probably going to update a few more sketches first. I need to finalize more of the fine details before I start my modeling. So I went ahead and attached my first update, which will hopefully clarify Bogart's head for everyone.

The bottom jaw is basically a big tooth coming out of the chin. I'm thinking of maybe making the big tooth into a few busted looking ones. The two mandibles as the upper jaw are connected by a translucent type skin. It folds up and lays on the lower jaw when his mouth is closed, and when is mouth is open, the translucent connective tissue stretches. It's very similar to the material on webbed feet.

I was also thinking about his ability to eat. I added a few layers of teeth inside his mouth and a more spikes on the inside wall off the mandibles. I will probably also add a long tongue to help scoop food.

I'll have more sketch updates soon.

Haha, thanks for the replies everyone. Bogart has never been too sensitive about his big feet. Because you know what they say about big feet..........big footprints, Did I forget to mention that Big Foot was blammed for a few of Bogart's footprints.

Anyways....update. This image is showing more detail for the legs. The legs are so big that I need to take in account for his arms hanging. So I added a curvature to the legs that will make more sense.

I also wanted to add more form to the legs so that I'm not stuck with using only alpha textures to make it appealing. The hip bone will be coming through the skin and a similar bone structure that's on his face, will appear on the side of the leg as well. Of course, everything's subject to change I will have another update soon about his back and tail.

I appreciate the comments so far. So, here is another pre-production update...the last one for now so I can start modeling. The first image shows the back, and how the tail and spine will look. Even though he's on the heavier side, his back has to be pretty muscular to support his massive tail...which is great b/c I can explore both heavier skin and muscles.

I was also thinking, with a tail so long, he may need some more support. I'm toying with the idea of adding two feet on each side, or maybe a few smaller tails (tentacles), off of the main tail; probably the smaller tentacles.

In the second image, I'm trying to work out the spine. I don't want to use the usual spikey look, so I'm thinkin' about making either: small arcs of bone, or jagged pieces of bone on both sides of the center; similar to the bones in our vertebrae. Below that drawing, I have a quick sketch of the end of his tail.

Allllllrighty...I need to start modeling. I decided to try my first attempt at using ZSpheres. I would like to have a different pipeline in my arsenal, and what better time to try it out than now. May need some major crits though on technique
